President Asif Ali Zardari has singled out Sufism as the most effective way to change the militant mindset and to root-out extremism once and for all.  

He was addressing an International conference on Sufism and peace organized by Pakistan Academy of letters at the Aiwan-e-Sadr, Islamabad. Elaborating on the teachings of Sufi saints about peace, love, tolerance and harmony, the president said, world needs mysticism now more than ever. He said, Sufism means purification of the souls and creating an environment where humanity is not threatened by individuals trying to impose their narrow version of religion upon a vast majority.
Defining Islam as a religion of peace, President Asif Ali Zardari said even christianity or any other religion does not preach extremism and militancy. The president told the international gathering that Islam does not teach its followers to adopt violent means for realization of objectives.
Participants of the international conference on Sufism and peace termed it an absorbing event.
